Lucy

I'm Lucy, and I make pottery by hand from my studio in L'Islet, on Guernsey's north coast.

I work with stoneware clay, throwing each piece on the wheel. No two pieces are ever identical, and that's exactly the point. Every mug, bowl and jug is shaped by hand, one at a time.

What I make is meant to be used. Picked up every morning, set on the table every evening. Pottery that becomes part of daily life rather than something put away in a cupboard.

Colour and Coast

My glazes come from what I see around me. The soft grey of wet granite, the warm cream of dry sand, the greens and blues of sea glass worn smooth by the tide. The wide Guernsey sky, sometimes pale and still, sometimes heavy with weather, finds its way into the palette too.

I'm not trying to copy nature exactly. It's more that the colours and textures of this place settle into the work naturally, because it's where I live and where I make.

How It's Made

Each piece takes around three weeks from start to finish. It begins with wedging the clay, then throwing on the wheel, where a ball of clay becomes a vessel in minutes that draw on years of practice.

After throwing, pieces dry slowly before the first bisque firing to around 1000°C. Then comes glazing: dipping, pouring and painting to create each finish. The final glaze firing at 1260°C transforms everything.

I work in small batches, guided by the kiln rather than a production schedule. When a firing is done, fresh stock goes out to the stall and the shop.

The Bean Jar Project

Alongside the everyday pottery, I'm developing a handmade Guernsey bean jar. It's a traditional stoneware cooking pot that has been part of island life for generations. The original pots have become harder to find, and I wanted to create a new version that respects the tradition while being made for today's kitchens.
